Beatles tribute band rocks 'Sing for a Cure' fundraiser Published: 10/21/05At 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, the Susan G. Komen Foundation will hold its fifth Sing for the Cure, with the internationally acclaimed Beatles tribute show, American English, at Drury Lane, 100 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace. There is a connection. Linda McCartney, wife of Beatles legend Paul McCartney, died of breast cancer, in April 1998. The awareness of her battle with breast cancer became a resounding marker for women, especially those still following McCartney's post-Beatles career. The activation of several charities and cancer detection organizations in honor of Linda McCartney's battle before and after her death, along with Paul McCartney's candid discussions, helped encourage millions of women to take an active role in early diagnosis as well as promote a vegetarian lifestyle. In August 2000, American English performed in Liverpool, England, and was seen by Cherie Booth, the founder of the Liverpool Linda McCartney Foundation. Her nostalgic experience with the band led to the involvement of American English in the organization's many attempts to raise public awareness of breast cancer. Eric Michaels of American English (aka Paul McCartney) recently lost his mother to breast cancer. "Performing for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Sing for the Cure is a very personal thing for me, as well as my professional tribute to Paul McCartney," he said. "Losing my mother, Mary, and Paul also losing his mother, Mary, to breast cancer and, ironically his wife, Linda, makes this all the more a special connection and opportunity to aid in finding a cure." Founded in 1982, the Susan G. Komen Foundation is a global leader with its innovative research in the fight against breast cancer. The foundation works with community-based outreach programs and with local businesses to increases awareness through events and activities. Tickets for the event are $65 for dinner at 7 p.m., with the show following at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information, call (708) 544-1126. ©2005 Liberty Suburban Chicago Newspapers.
